Case File 2018.01.12

Barely 48 hours after a freighter ran into one of Chicago's piers leaving all but one crew member dead-- it took a little time to ID the bodies and figure out the missing crew member. It wasn't long before Elena and Liam were pulling up in her car to the man's apartment. If not for his current lack of magic for the moment, Liam's presence in the metal vehicle probably would have forced it to a halt before it even made it around one block. They'd made it to an apartment that wasn't the most stunning of buildings-- they'd lucked out and an older resident was leaving as they arrived. An older woman that seeing Liam limping up the stairs held open the door for them upon a polite request. The appearance and contrast between Elena and Liam were curious, but not enough to set the man Jacob Reynolds on guard as the two made their way to speak with this missing crew member from the freighter.

The man opened the door to let them both in as Elena gave a smile and started off casually to inquire about this man's recent work on the Haven-- the freighter that had crashed into the pier less than 48 hours prior. The inside of the apartment was a mess, the man explained it due to working a lot and little time to clean and the TV knocked over by a cat and not yet replaced. He didn't seem to believe they were with the police, Elena formally introduced herself as Captain with CPD Special investigations. Her instinct had her sensing that this man wasn't really Jacob and she called him on it as he turned to face her again, hand on her weapon.

From there, everything happened quickly-- being called out the man started making unnatural twisting motions with his fingers at the same time that Liam reacted and pulled a flimsy table up to drive forward into the man pretending to be Jacob. The action shielded Elena from whatever the man did to cause the table to explode into splinters and green mist. The odd energy of that shot continued, just wide of Elena by half a foot before searing right through the wall behind her to leave a nice baseball sized hole in its wake. Liam cleared the distance between him and the man in three bounds, crashing him through splintering wood and glass as the impostor went through the second story window. He looked back to Elena to make sure he had the situation in the apartment before drawing his sword and heading out after the man, the fall hadn't done much to hinder his retreat and Liam wasn't about to let him get away now.
